Carol Smith Resistered Nurse I am a mature woman, but fit and active with my own teeth and whereas I draw the line at bungee jumping I have been known to do the odd sky dive and I am a warm blooded, cold footed, sentimental, fully paid up member of the human race.
A Health care professional by character, sky diver by accident. workaholic by inclination collector of single socks and not passed my sell by date.

Having been in the Nursing profession for 46 years the value and use of humor in any situation has always been close to my heart. As a nursing Sister you see life in all its rawness the joy in giving birth, the immense sadness at death and every situation in between. When new patients come onto a ward and are waiting for their “op” making them feel at home is for me one of the most important situations to involve humor. You can see it in their faces, you don’t have to ask ! I tell them that if they think that everyone else in the world doesn’t feel the way they do then they should think again. and, as we haven’t lost anyone yet they won’t be the first.
If it is a man and I have to give an injection, I tell him it is so they don’t get pregnant ( I do follow it up by giving them the real reason ). When I ask them their pain score and I am looking for an answer 0-10 ( 10 being the worst), Most people are scared to giver the wrong number so I tell them they won’t get a detention if they get it wrong. If on the other hand they don’t have any pain, they still look worried, so I tell them it is not compulsory to have pain.

Writing this down for the first time it doesn’t seem funny but I am not looking for a belly laugh here just to have patients lighten up and relax a little.
The identity badges that health care professionals wear !!
I was so tired of looking at peoples bosoms for a long time That I decided to have a badge made just saying “Carol” With letters 2cms high. It is a conversation piece You so cannot miss it, that normally makes patients laugh straight away, And I tell them it is for the hard of hearing. When they are in their theatre gown I always tell them how sexy they look ( you know the gowns that fastens at the back and show your “bum” to the world) and as for the stockings I make then laugh so much that they want to order another pair to take home for their next ball !

In conclusion,
I have always been ready to have a good laugh to see the funny side. I am also charming, delightful, talented, calm, good natured and full of bull.
I have been known to stop mid sentence,
Midweek midwifery………………..I could go on............
